A GLIMPSE into Northwich's maritime past is offered with this photograph from the 1950s.

Davenham man Ray Beedham has shared this picture of workers at WJ Yarwood and Sons watching the launch of a tug.

Ray completed a full apprenticeship there in the mid-1950s before he joined the Navy.

"It was an experience," he said.

"We were working in boat engines and if you didn't have a tool then you had to go and make it.

"It was a wonderful place."

The shipbuilding company, on the River Weaver, built more than 1,000 ships between 1896 and 1965, when it closed.

Ray recognised Donald Whitehead, who he was apprentice to, as well as Bob Holland and Tony Lambert.

Ray said: "I can't see myself on there so I might not have been there but it was taken in the 1950s."

Anyone who can name any more of the faces or has any more information of when it was taken should ring the Guardian on 01606 813624.
