HS2 campaigners are planning a series of bonfires to represent the burning of the billions of pounds earmarked for the planned high speed rail link.

The Bonfires and Beacons event is due to take place on January 31, 2015 to mark the second anniversary of the announcement of phase two of of HS2.

The event is being planned by campaign group Mid Cheshire Against HS2 following its Bikes and Banners cycle day from Pickmere to Wimboldsley.

The 17-mile route took in brief stops at points at which campaigners say the planned high speed rail link will cross local roads, and included stops at Wincham, Lostock Gralam and Lostock Green.

Those taking part in the five-hour event included group members Ewen Simpson, Graham Dellow, Ros Todhunter, Philip Lund, Chris Triffitt and Bob Taylor.

Photographs were taken at the crossing points of group members with banners, which the group plans to use on its website and Facebook page to increase public awareness of its campaign.

“It was a great day, well organised and well supported, and it raised awareness among the public of the number of proposed crossing points,” said Graham Dellow.

“I don’t think people realise how many crossings there will be because of HS2 in the space of the 17 miles we covered, and this may well be the first cycle ride held to promote the anti-HS2 cause.”
