TALENTED poets from a Northwich college have been recognised in two prestigious contests.

Sir John Deane's College students Hannah Else and Hollie Murray, both 17, will see their poems published after fighting off national competition in two separate young writers’ challenges.

Hannah, from Whitley, came third in the Portico Brotherton Young Poetry Prize 2014, with her poem 'Grounded'.

The theme of the competition was conflict and community, with Hannah’s poem shifting the focus to family conflicts.

“I write a lot of poetry at home, so much so that I when I received the news that I had come third I couldn’t remember which poem I had entered into the competition,” she said.

“It’s great to know someone has enjoyed reading my work and I’m looking forward to seeing the poem published in the new anthology.”

Hollie, from Winsford, also saw her entry stand out from the rest in the Young Writers poetry competition.

Her poem, 'Silenced Voices', was selected for the Young Writers’ Anthology called War of Words. The competition’s theme was also conflict.

“Writing is huge passion of mine, I have my own blog and love to write poetry so I’m really proud to have been selected for the anthology,” said Holly.

Sue Harding, who has taught both students English at Sir John Deane’s College, said: “This is a fantastic achievement for both girls.

“They have fought off fierce competition from across the country to have their work published so we are all very proud of them both.”
