SPEED monitoring has started in Davenham's 20mph zone thanks to volunteers from the village.

A community speed watch group has been launched by Davenham Parish Council to raise awareness of the new limit and encourage drivers to stick to it.

The village centre, including London Road, Green Lane, Church Street and Fulton Grove, became a 20mph zone last year.

Cllr Andy Duff, parish council chairman, said: "It's very visible and a very positive step forward in taking action to try to enforce the speed limit.

"It's great that members of the community are doing it."

Plans are also progressing to extend the 20mph zone to include Mount Pleasant Road and Hartford Road.

Vicky Stock, parish council clerk, said Cheshire West and Chester Council's highways department had completed a consultation about phase two with residents before Christmas and the next stage was for them to win approval from councillors to advertise the scheme.

"They estimate the new limit will be in place in about two to three months," she said.

The parish council also hopes that 20mph roundels will be painted on road surfaces as part of the implementation of phase two.
