THE Grange Junior School has been chosen as one of a number of schools in Cheshire West and Chester to receive Bikeability cycle training.

The training is designed to give children the skills and experience to cycle safely and confidently, and involves cycling in a playground and on roads around the school.

The Bikeability levels 1 and 2 are appropriate for children in Year 6 who are able to ride their bicycles.

Level one consists of off-road training in the school grounds, and is designed to ensure pupils use the correct starting procedure, can demonstrate they have full control of their bikes and can use gears correctly.

Level two introduces the pupils to riding on the roads in an appropriately risk-assessed environment. The correct procedures for starting, stopping, carrying out manoeuvres, dealing safely with junctions and other hazards are covered.

“Children enjoy cycling, and it brings many health benefits, develops confidence and gives them independence,” said a school spokesman.

“Children who have been trained are much safer and tend to cycle more. This training is being promoted by the council and is being carried out by a company called Cycle Experience.”
