ELDERLY residents in Wincham have the chance to get together at a new group at Wincham Community Centre.

The Out of Hours group has been launched in the village as part of an ongoing programme by Cheshire Community Development Trust.

It is held at the centre every Tuesday from 7pm to 9pm, and is aimed at the community’s older age group.

Trust chief executive Arthur Neil said: “The first get together on April 28 was attended by only a few people, but they thought it was a good idea and look forward to seeing the group grow.

“The groups first began over 25 years ago as a means of offering a break to carers, but they have evolved into their present form to give people something to do in the evenings when most other activities for pensioners have finished.

“The groups have their own character and offer a variety of activities and entertainments from bingo to guest speakers, buffet tea, pub outings, slide shows, singalongs, comedy hour – whatever the members want to do.

“We try to keep them as cost-effective as possible, so six games of bingo and a cup of tea and a biscuit could be just £2.

“The groups are mainly funded by Cheshire West and Chester Council, which sees them as a great way to combat isolation. The Wincham group is funded by Cheshire Community Foundation.

“We’re sure once established the new group will be as popular as the others and people will look forward to coming along each week.”

Out of Hours groups run at Queen Elizabeth House, Northwich, Heathbrook in Rudheath, Fountain Court in Davenham, Dingle Centre in Winsford, Oathills Lea in Tarporley and Moreton’s Mead in Weaverham, as well as groups in Ellesmere Port and Chester.

The Trust, based in Navigation Road, Northwich, has been around in one form or another since 1922.

One of its activities is the Dial-a-Ride service, which provides a door-to-door service for those unable to use public transport.

The Trust also provides evening and weekend get-togethers for older people to enjoy company and get involved in things they enjoy.
