A CRICKET match photograph from 1955 brought back happy memories for a Guardian reader with a treasure from the day.

Diane Tongue, neé Brown, lives in Worcestershire but grew up in the Daneside area of Northwich in the 1950s and picks up the Guardian when visiting the area.

She spotted a Remember When article about the 1955 match between Northwich Cricket Club and a Commonwealth XI team, featuring some of the some of the top players in the international test arena of the time.

Diane contacted the Guardian as her brother Colin was a member of the Northwich team and she still had a cricket bat signed by the stars.

She said: "On a recent brief visit to Northwich I picked up your local paper and noticed a photo of my late brother, Colin Brown, when he played cricket for Northwich in the '50s.

"He gave me a miniature cricket bat with the signatures including those of Gary Sobers and Frank Worrell and I treasure this as a momento of happy times.

"The date on the bat is 1957 so I assume there were later visits from the Commonwealth XI.

"Thanks for the memories."

The match drew a crowd of almost 2,000 people and raised money for the cricket club, then based in Vicarage Road, and local charities.

The original photograph was sent to the Guardian by the newspaper's former sports editor Mike Talbot-Butler, who said he organised a series of celebrity matches when he was playing member and former club captain.
