OLD friends chatted about their time together at a local bakery when they met at a lunch club.

Agnes Plant and Beryl Lowe worked at Riley’s Bakery in London Road, Northwich, in the late 1940s.

They had lost contact over the years, but shared memories of those years when they met at a free prize bingo and lunch club at Barnton Memorial Hall.

Agnes, 84, lives in Barnton, and was at the lunch club with her daughter Wendy Chambers when Beryl, from Anderton, came across to speak to them.

“Beryl saw my mum and came across to us,” said Wendy.

“My mum was pleased to see her, and they talked about the old times at Riley’s.

“They had seen each other over the years, but have not really had a good chat, and it was nice for them to be able to meet.

“My mum and Beryl worked together at the bakery for about three or four years.

“The bakery had a van for delivering bread and cakes around the area, and my mum used to go on the bread round.

“She sometimes took over the driving at the age of 15 with Jim Riley, the owner, who was a baker and delivery driver.

“Agnes and Beryl were working at the bakery when Northwich was flooded, and bread had to be brought in from Manchester.”

Agnes and Beryl lost contact when Agnes went to work at Oakmere Hall at Oakmere when it served as a rehabilitation centre for injured miners.

The bingo and lunch club is organised by Barnton parish councillor Judith Hughes, and is held every two weeks.

Cllr Hughes launched the club recently to run alongside regular bingo sessions she organises at the hall.

“The club is going really well, and we had more than 30 people at the last one,” she said.

A table top sale runs alongside the lunch club between midday and 1pm, followed by bingo from 1pm to 2pm.

“The aim of the club is to bring the community together, and it was really nice that Agnes and Beryl met up,” said Cllr Hughes.
