A KINGSMEAD woman held a day in the village to show support for the Armed Forces and pay tribute to her partner.

Cheryl Shepherd held her third Armed Forces Day outside the Kingfisher on Saturday, June 27, to raise awareness of their work.

In previous years she has organised the event with partner Alan Lilly but he died in March, aged 56, after only being diagnosed with cancer in November last year.

"In a sense I'm doing it for him this year," she said.

"He worked for veterans and families and supported them and always supported what I did and vice versa.

"It's been a bit of a tough time but what better way to remember him."

Cheryl's daughter Cara, 13, helped to organise the event, which included Army cadets, bouncy castle and tombola.

Her son Scott, 18, has helped at past events but has himself joined the Army and this year is serving in Germany in the Queen's Dragoon Guards.

Cheryl, who is also a veteran, said: "Armed Forces Day isn't about fundraising, it's purely increasing awareness and showing support to the Armed Forces."
