A HOST of Northwich attractions will open for free during a historic day of celebration.

Northwich Heritage Open Day takes place on September 12, giving visitors chance to explore the settings and landscapes that shaped the town.

Alison Lomax, manager of the Saltscape Partnership which is coordinating the event, said: "Northwich’s first ever Heritage Open Day will give visitors the chance to find out about the important role all these attractions played in the area’s history, particularly the salt industry and the incredible impact it has had on the landscape.

"That is why as well as museums opening for free we are encouraging people to explore the landscape with guided walks of the flashes, scavenger hunts through ancient woodlands and even canoeing on the canal.

"We’re delighted to see so many local organisations and volunteers working with Saltscape to make sure the day will be a real success."

During the day Weaver Hall Museum and Workhouse will offer visitors chance to find out what life was like in the Victorian workhouse and schoolroom and the Lion Salt Works, the last open-pan salt works in the country and one of only four in the world, will be free to visitors including guided tours.

The day will also see the official opening of the newly restored toll buildings at Anderton Boat Lift where visitors will be transported back in time accompanied by an actor playing the role of the building’s clerk.

Renowned Cheshire Storytellers the Journeyman and Sally Forth will also be regaling families with stories inspired by the post-industrial landscape around Northwich Woodlands.

The free storytelling walks include tales of a ghostly woman, working ponies, an underground ballroom, a visiting Tsar and a lonely butterfly.

A number of activities will also take place in Northwich town centre.

Jane Hough, from Northwich Business Improvement District (BID), said: "The town centre will come to life with street entertainers, face painters, musicians and craft activities alongside the regular Artisan Market.

"Then visitors and townsfolk alike will be invited to take a free tractor and trailer ride to the woodlands to for the storytelling walks along the footpath around Neumann’s Flash. "There you can also try your hand at some bushcraft, or even have a go at fishing under the experience tuition of local angler from Barnton and Frodsham Angling Club."

All activities are free of charge but tours and storytelling sessions must be booked in advance at saltscape.co.uk/heritage or by ringing 01606 723160.
