WALKING enthusiast Robin Beal completed two long-distance paths for charity in memory of his grandmother.

Robin, 31, from Castle, raised £1,433 by walking the Gritstone and Sandstone Trails, a total of 69 miles, over four and a half days.

He took on the challenge in memory of his grandmother Eileen, who died from pulmonary fibrosis, and the money he raised will go to Action for Pulmonary Fibrosis.

Robin is a pharmacy technician and dispenser at Boots in Winsford, and set out to raise £100, but smashed his target when sponsorship flooded in from colleagues of his parents and his colleagues and customers.

The Gritstone Trail runs for 35 miles from Disley to Kidsgrove, and the Sandstone Trail covers 34 miles between Whitchurch and Frodsham.

Robin had raised £1,000 for the Army Benevolent Fund in 2013 by taking part in a sponsored walk with his dad, and took on the trails challenge at the end of August in memory of his grandmother, who died in January at the age of 79.

He was supported en-route by members of his family, with his wife Lucy, his stepson Dylan, Robin’s parents Richard and Sandra, from Anderton, and his younger brother Matthew walking sections of the route to keep him company.

“It was hard work, but we all enjoyed it and I’m so proud of Robin, who walked for seven to eight hours a day,” said Sandra.

“He is not one for blowing his own trumpet, and was staggered by how much he raised.

“He got a lot of donations from his dad’s colleagues, and my colleagues were also very generous, as were Robin’s colleagues and customers at Boots. He was also supported by family and friends.”

Robin’s dad works at Cisco Systems in Didsbury, and his mum is in the adult education department at Sir John Deane’s College.

Robin’s other grandmother, Joy, died a few weeks ago, and he is planning another sponsored walk next year for the British Heart Foundation in her memory.

“I had massive support from people at work, and would like to thank everyone who supported me,” said Robin, who also thanked the Cliff Dickenson Ford dealership of Winsford for its donations.
