DOZENS of footsore walkers completed a marathon challenge at the weekend in aid of Norley Village Hall.

The Norley Walkathon was aimed at raising money to replace the radiators at the village hall, and was graced with beautiful sunshine.

The 48 walkers set off from the village hall at 8.15am on Saturday, and their 26.4-mile route, which was almost all off-road, took in numerous delightful footpaths.

The 48 walkers were joined en-route by a group of Norley Scouts, and finished at The Tigers Head pub in Norley, where they enjoyed a hotpot supper, the last walkers arriving at 7.10pm.

The Norley Walkathon is held every two years, and Saturday’s fundraiser was dubbed Ramble for Radiators, following a Walk for Windows and Trek for Toilets, which were held four and two years ago respectively.

“Marshals were stationed en-route, giving great support, drinks and snacks, which were most welcome,” said Arnold Ashbrook, from Norley, who created the route.

“All in all it was a great team effort, bringing together people of the village from the age of seven to over 70, and apart from the aches, pains and blisters the day was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone.

“It was a great example of community spirit as well as an important fundraiser for the village hall.

“We did not use any roads, and the majority of the route was along footpaths.

“There is some lovely countryside in this area, and I was pleasantly surprised at the number of people who took part.”

He thanked everyone who took part and supported the walkers.

The route took in the Sandstone Trail, the Eddisbury Way, Delamere Way, Whitegate Way and Weaver Way, and one of the highlights was the superb view walkers enjoyed from the top of Eddisbury Hill.

The walk was organised by Arnold, his wife Noreen, who acted as chief marshal on the day, and Penny Clarke. Noreen and Penny are members of the village hall committee.

Walkers sought sponsorship support for the challenge or gave donations, and the organisers hope the event will have raised £1,000 towards the replacement of the village hall radiators.
