POLICE are asking residents to look out for their elderly neighbours after “despicable” conmen targeted pensioners in Moulton.

The two incidents happened within the space of 40 minutes, and police investigating are looking to see whether the incidents are connected.

“These are despicable crimes against elderly victims, and I would urge the community to be vigilant and look out for your neighbours,” said Inspector Dave Snasdell from Northwich Local Policing Unit.

On Monday, September 28 a distraction burglary took place in Meadow Lane.

At about 2.30pm a man walked into the home of a 93-year-old woman and asked her where the money was.

He stole a quantity of cash from the property, and the man is described as white, in his mid-20s and of slim build.

At about 3.10pm on the same day a white man who was wearing a green fluorescent workman’s jacket and a cap called at an elderly woman’s home in Beechfield.

He told the woman that he had damaged her guttering and had repaired it for her, and the cost of the work would be £50.

The woman challenged the man, who made off. No damage had been done to the guttering or work been carried out.

“We do not know if these two incidents are connected but are continuing our investigations,” said Insp Snasdell, who encouraged people to report anything suspicious to the police.

“We would sooner you report any suspicious activity and have a false call with good intent rather than miss the opportunity to identify suspects for these type of offences.

“At the very least if you are concerned call in on the neighbour, record any details, particularly of motor vehicles persons may be using, and report the incident to the police.”

If anyone has information on either of the incidents at Moulton on September 28, or has had a similar call at their home please contact the police on 101.
