THREE motorists had their vehicles seized on Wednesday as Northwich Police carried out an operation aimed at improving safety on the roads.

Operation Action was focused on the Fatal 4, the four main causes of fatal collisions on the roads – speeding, driving under the influence of drink or drugs, failing to wear a seat belt and in-car tech or mobile phone use.

The operation was undertaken in various parts of the town, and involved officers from the Local Policing Team, supported by Taskforce Officers, who were on foot and in vehicles, which included a speed camera van.

“The operation aimed to improve safety on the roads, in the community as a whole, and to offer reassurance to local residents,” said a Northwich police spokesman.

“Following the operation 20 people were reported for traffic offences.

“Seventeen drivers were recorded driving at excessive speed, three motorists had their vehicles seized for not having any motor insurance in place, three people were reported to the DVLA for having no vehicle insurance and two people were arrested.

“Officers had a productive and busy day, and Northwich Local Policing Team wants the people of Northwich to know that we’re here when and where you need us.”

The operation also aimed to educate drivers about the potential consequences of their actions on the roads.

Sgt Anthony Gallagher said: “The rules of the road are there for a reason, and we want to get the message across that we will not tolerate drivers who choose to ignore those rules.

“We want to make motorists more aware of how their driving impacts on other road users.

“We also want to educate motorists about the risks and dangers associated with these four key factors.

"Operations such as this help to hit home important safety messages, with the ultimate aim of reducing the number of collisions on roads in Cheshire.”

Throughout April Cheshire Police will be targeting those who drink and drive, use excessive speed and technology while driving and those not wearing a seatbelt.

Anyone suspected of being involved in these offences will be stopped and dealt with accordingly.
