MARKET traders specialising in vintage and antique items are being sought for a special trip down memory lane.

Northwich Market opened on May 5, 1966, and traders are inviting people to join them next Saturday at celebrations to mark the market’s 50th anniversary.

Northwich covers band The Bohemian Kings will be playing hits from the swinging 60s, there will be a free retro bag for every child and special anniversary discounts at many stalls.

The anniversary celebrations will also feature vintage and antique stalls, and free raffle tickets are up for grabs, with the chance to win £50 in vouchers for the market.

Market manager Karen Bates is keen to attract as many vintage stalls as possible on the day, and is asking people who would like to have a stall on May 7 to contact her as soon as possible.

There will be no charge for anyone taking a stall on the day, to encourage people to take a stall on a longer-term basis.

“We are encouraging people to come along to Northwich Market next Saturday to celebrate the fact that there is still an historic market there and to help put the market back on the map,” said Karen, who is in charge of markets at Northwich, Winsford, Ellesmere Port and Chester.

“We would like people to come and appreciate what’s on offer, and are encouraging them to shop and support small businesses.

“The market is like a mini-community, and the traders are like a family. They have embraced the anniversary celebrations, and are looking forward to the day.”

There will be gazebos outside the indoor market to encourage people to take part in the celebrations and take a stall outdoors, although Karen is particularly keen to attract indoor stall holders for the day.

Northwich Market takes place on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday, and the celebrations run from 9am to 4pm.

Anyone who would like a stall on Saturday is asked to ring Karen on 01244 973040.

The market toilets in Applemarket Street have reopened following a £46,000 upgrade, and are to be maintained by Northwich Town Council.
