BARNTON’S ageing skatepark is under deconstruction to make way for new equipment.

The skatepark at the Nursery Road Recreation Ground was created in 2005, and is popular with teenagers from Barnton and Northwich.

However, Barnton Parish Council has planned to replace the skatepark for some time due to the deteriorating equipment.

The new skatepark has cost the council around £53,000, and has been funded through grants and donations from schools and businesses.

A notice on Barnton Parish Council’s Facebook page said: “Work on the new skatepark starts on Monday, June 20.

“Therefore the area will be closed for approximately two weeks whilst the old park is removed and the new skate park is built.”

Barnton teenager Tom Rowley helped raise almost £7,200 for the new skatepark after starting a GoFundMe campaign. That money will pay for a new ramp.

Tom, 16, said: “It’s been hard work but it’s paid off.

“It’s quite strange knowing it’s going because everyone enjoys it so much. I am there every day.”

Tom gave a ‘huge thank you’ to everyone who helped his fundraising drive, but also gave himself a pat on the back.

He said: “It’s my park really, no-one else would have done it.”

Tom’s efforts haven't gone unnoticed in the Barnton community.

Speaking on Facebook, Alan Jackson, said: “Good news for all the young'uns, and particularly Tom Rowley, who should feel extra proud of himself right now.”

At Barnton Parish Council’s last full council meeting, Cllr Judith Phoenix, said the skatepark is ‘under deconstruction as we speak’.

“The fencing is up and they are started dismantling it,” Cllr Phoenix said.

“They’re hoping it will take this week to dismantle it and next week to put it up again, the new one.”

Cllr Phoenix, who sits on the skatepark committee, also suggested erecting a sign thanking all of the companies that have helped.

The council are now planning an opening ceremony to welcome the new skatepark.

Barnton Parish Council chairman, Dilys Hooper, suggested booking a silver band for the ceremony and councillors also suggested trying to organise for a group of skaters to put on a display.

Free crisps, lollipops and fruit drinks were also mooted for youngsters.

A date for the opening ceremony has yet to be finalised.
