A NORTHWICH band could get the seal of approval from rock royalty after being nominated for a competition aimed at protecting artists’ intellectual property rights.

Rock the House is a parliamentary live music and venue competition that celebrates up-and-coming unsigned British artists and the live music venues that support them.

This year, Graham Evans, MP for Weaver Vale, has nominated the alternative/indie band, Pacific, in the Over 19 Band category.

He also nominated Northwich artist Chris Tavener in the Over 19 Solo Artist category.

Brian May, who is best known as the lead guitarist of the rock band Queen, is a Patron of Rock the House.

“It is a great honour to back Rock the House,” Brian said.

“The UK is a hotbed of musical talent from all genres, and if the British music industry is going to grow and thrive then musicians need to be able to make a living from selling their product.

“This competition gives all musicians, from all backgrounds the chance to get out there and make live music – one of the things Brits do best.”

Rock the House, now in its fifth year, aims to raise awareness of the importance of protecting Intellectual Property Rights among legislators and the general public.

The competition now in its fifth year, is judged by some of the leading lights of industry, with prizes ranging from festival slots, studio time and top-notch equipment.

A panel of international music industry experts and musicians determine the finalists who then compete in a live battle of the bands.

The finale reception will see the winners in each artist's category perform live on the Terrace of the House of Commons.

Rock legend Alice Cooper, who is also a Patron of Rock the House, said: “Rock the House is a great project which celebrates the fantastic diversity of the British music scene and gives musicians a vehicle through which to hold their legislators accountable about protecting the music industry’s intellectual property.”

Mr Evans said: “This is an excellent opportunity for Weaver Vale to celebrate our local talent and, as all nominations are judged by industry experts, there is no finer chance for our musicians to gain exposure.

“We are very lucky to have such talented artists in our midst – good luck.”
