GRAHAM Evans has leapt to the defence of David Cameron following his resignation in the wake of the UK voting to leave the European Union.

In Cheshire West and Chester, 98,082 (50.7 per cent) of residents in decided to leave the EU, while 95,455 (49.3 per cent) voted to remain.

Nationally, the Leave campaign polled 52 per cent votes, which led to the resignation of PM David Cameron.

Mr Evans, MP for Weaver Vale, said referendum result will likely go down as ‘one of the most significant post-war events in modern British history’.

Despite failing to lead the Lead campaign to victory, Mr Evans said the Prime Minister fought with ‘blood, sweat and tears’.

“To his credit, the Prime Minister David Cameron fought this campaign the only way he knows how, with his all – blood, sweat and tears,” Mr Evans said.

“When he does step aside, David Cameron will be remembered as a great reforming Prime Minister.

"The Prime Minister that brought Britain back from the brink of economic ruin.

“When he took office, Britain was in the midst of the deepest recession since the Second World War, one in every four pounds we were spending was borrowed.

“This year Britain was the fastest growing major economy in the world, employment was at a record high and two million more children are being taught in schools that are rated as ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’.”

Mr Evans claimed he was a ‘Eurosceptic at heart’ and said he was a ‘reluctant inner'.

He now called on the UK to unite to secure the ‘best deal for Britain’.

“Though we do not yet know the full impact, the public vote was clear – a vote to leave the European Union,” Mr Evans said.

“I have always been a Eurosceptic at heart, but I have been clear that I was a ‘reluctant inner’ from the start.

"I believed that we were safer, stronger and more secure as part of a reformed Europe.

“But now we need to work together to secure the best deal for Britain. To bring stability to the markets at home and abroad and to champion investment in our great country.”
