TRIATHLETE Alex Cartney is relishing the chance to join the rat race in a bid to help a good cause.

The 28-year-old is to take on a gruelling two-day challenge in Scotland during which he will cycle, run and kayak 105 miles.

Alex and his dad Steve, who are from Moulton, are taking part in Rat Race Coast to Coast 2016, which takes place against the backdrop of the Scottish Highlands, one of the most famous mountain landscapes in the world.

Alex and Steve, 63, will be among a thousand competitors taking part in the event on Saturday and Sunday, September 10 and 11.

The challenge begins with a seven-mile trek/run, followed by a road cycle over 48 miles and a 1.5-mile run and kayak. Then it’s a 20.5-mile off-road cycle, followed by a 13.5-mile road cycle and a 14-mile trek/trail run before the event ends with a mile-long flat water kayak.

The route takes the competitors from Nairn on the east coast of northern Scotland to Glencoe on the west, and involves 10,840 feet of ascent.

Alex is an operations manager for Fun 4 All play and party centres and a member of Knutsford Tri Club, and Scotland has a special meaning for him as his dad’s family hails from there.

He took part in the event last year to raise money for Genetic Disorders UK, and will be raising money for the same cause this time.

“It’s tough, but was probably the best race I have ever taken part in,” said Alex.

“There was great camaraderie among the people taking part, the scenery was unbelievable and it was such an achievement to complete it.”

Alex’s dad decided to take part in this year’s event after coming up to Scotland last year to support his son’s entry in the challenge.

Their support team this year will be Alex’s mum Judith and his fiancée Katie.

Alex raised £157 last year, and has so far raised £55 towards his target of £400 for the 2016 event.

He thanked everyone who has supported him, including Rosebank Sports from Northwich and Dave Hinde Cycles for their advice and help with services their bikes.
