AN APPEAL has been launched after a 14-year-old girl was sexually assaulted in Northwich.

The incident is believed to have taken place in Poors Wood, Kingsmead, between 7.30pm and 8pm sometime in March this year. The incident has only recently been reported to police.

The victim was walking in the wood when she was approached by a man. He sexually assaulted her and then left the scene.

Police are now appealing for anyone who has any information about the incident or the identity of the offender to come forward.

Officers are keen to trace a woman who was walking terrier dog and stopped to talk to the victim shortly after the incident, before walking off towards the River Weaver.

The man is described as white, aged between 35-45, with dark brown hair, 5’ 10” tall with a deep voice. He also had stubble and scarring from acne on his face.

He was wearing black baggy trousers, a black hooded top with red writing on it and black lace-up shoes.

Det Insp Adam Waller said: “We are currently carrying out a number of enquiries in relation to this incident and are urging local people to cast their minds back to March to see if they can remember anything significant, which might assist with the investigation.

“We appreciate that this is asking people to think back over a period of a few months but even the smallest detail can be significant when piecing together a case.

“In particular we are keen to trace a woman who is believed to have stopped and spoken to the victim around the time of the incident.

“The woman may not have realised that something was wrong at the time. If this is you please come forward and speak to us – you may not have realised that something was wrong.”

Chief Insp Simon Meegan, from Northwich Local Policing Unit, warned residents to be vigilant when out and about.

“I would like to reassure the local community that incidents such as this are rare and officers are doing all they can to trace whoever is responsible.

“We would always urge people to follow basic safety advice when out and about – remain vigilant when walking alone especially at night, maintain an awareness of your surroundings and try and stick to well-lit areas.

“If you see anyone acting suspiciously or have any concerns then contact police immediately.”

Anyone with any information is urged to call Cheshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 848 of 30/06/16.  Information can also be left anonymously, via Crimestoppers, on 0800 555 111.
