GLYNN Cookson won his 11th Mid Cheshire Merit title at Comberbach Bowls Club on Sunday in a closely fought final against Kevin Duncalf.

The final was nip and tuck throughout with no player establishing a commanding advantage.

Duncalf appeared to be edging towards taking the title as he took a 18-15 lead but Cookson responded with a five break to be on the verge of victory at 20-18.

A double from Duncalf on the penultimate end saw the scores tied at 20-20.

Cookson then secured victory with the last bowl of the final to win 21-20 and collect the winner’s cheque and the D&D Coatings sponsored trophy.

The Mid Cheshire Federation team play their final fixture of the 2023 season on Sunday and they have selected Rudheath Social Club for the home venue.

While they currently stand third in the table they are poised to secure promotion as they sit only two points behind Airedale, who have completed their fixtures.

Sunday’s fixture sees them face Furness, who also have a two-point advantage over the Mid Cheshire team so a win on Sunday could well see them finish the season as champions as they hold a six-point advantage over Preston, who occupy fourth spot in the table. The game starts at 2pm.

The latest qualifiers at Wharton Cons on Sunday were Scott Taylor and Leighton Roberts.

There are now only two further qualifying sessions before the final’s night on Sunday, August 27. The seventh qualifying session takes place on Sunday starting at 6pm.
