NORTHWICH inflicted further woe on Warrington, who have lost two of their first three matches.

The hosts scored a goal in each half to extend their own unbeaten start in Division One North, with Godwin Abadaki and Michael Clarke on target for Jim Gannon’s men.

A breakthrough arrived after 17 minutes when Abadaki, after Callum Henry had nudged Brian Summerskill’s free kick into his path, applied a finishing touch.

They might have scored again when Clarke shot weakly at goalkeeper Karl Wills after meeting Summerskill’s assist.

Gary Burnett then went close after making the most of an error by Yellows defender Jay McCarten, shooting low but wide of an upright.

Substitute Aboubacar Sanago then crafted an opening for Bohan Dixon shortly after half time, but the midfielder’s effort flew past both Wills and the post.

Clarke did convert when Chris Smalley’s cross reached him on 58 minutes, but a linesman ruled the striker to have been in an offside position when he scored with a header.

Vics did double their lead on 67 minutes though, Clarke finished smartly from Sanogo’s centre despite retreating Warrington defender Tom Hardwick applying pressure.

Warrington mustered a rally of sorts, but Scott Metcalfe headed high from Louis Corrigan’s corner and the latter then sent a free kick over the bar.

Northwich return to action again in the FA Cup preliminary round this weekend, when Northern Counties East League Division One side Emley are their guests at Flixton, kick off 3pm.
