ERIC Webber came within a frame of earning a place in England’s under 23s team.

The teenager, who plays for Gladstone in the Northwich and District League, lost a play-off decider against Jack Bennett, from Kent, in a trial at Great Yarmouth.

He won six matches, including a round robin stage, to set up a winner-takes-all contest.

“It’s a fantastic achievement by Eric to get that far at the first attempt,” said league spokesman Kevin Barry.

“Most of his opponents were older, and I’m confident he has the ability to make the national team at some level in the years to come.”

Webber restored parity against Bennett after losing the first two frames, then lost a tactical battle that lasted more than three quarters of an hour.

Clubmate Adam Griffiths recorded wins against Mike King (3-1), Steve Burton (3-1) and Rob Walsh (3-0) before bowing out of the trials against Steve Thompson.

Holders Rudheath reached the Northwich and District League Team Knockout final following a 4-2 win against in-form Owley Wood A.

The eight-time winners will face Gladstone A following their 4-2 win against underdogs Moulton Legion.

Meanwhile Greenbank A, contenders for promotion from Division Two, whitewashed higher-ranked Castle Private A 4-0 in the Supplementary Shield semi finals.

Their reward is a head-to-head with Gladstone B, who avoided an upset by beating Owley Wood B 5-2 in the other last four tie at Greenbank.

Both finals are scheduled for Wednesday, April 1.
