Winnington Park 1 Urmston 1

WINNINGTON Park brought to an end a six-match losing streak in North Men’s League Division Two West on Saturday.

A determined performance saw Park hold high-flying Urmston, who sit third, although it was not enough to move the hosts off the bottom of the table.

However, Park know a win against Bebington on Saturday, which would prove only their second of the season so far, would lift them above their relegation rivals.

Park fielded a strong squad at Sir John Deane’s College and were confident of giving Urmston a tough afternoon.

Playing a slightly more defensive formation, Park allowed the visitors plenty of the ball but restricted them to few clear cut chances.

But after 20 minutes, Urmston hit the post with a powerful flick from a penalty corner.

Park made the most of this good fortune and took the lead with captain Pete Evans drilling home a low shot from the hosts’ first penalty corner.

It could have been two when a flowing move was almost finished at the far post by Dan Hilton.

At 1-0 at half time, Park knew they could not afford a poor second half like in recent weeks.

Urmston, as expected, started strongly and forced Park deeper.

But a new centre back partnership of Adam Kueres and Dave Thompson were outstanding against a tricky forward line.

However Urmston drew level from an unstoppable penalty corner drag flick with 20 minutes remaining.

This set up a very competitive finale which saw both teams losing players to the sin bin for poor challenges.

Both had chances to snatch all three points, Evans going closest for Park, but it finished all square.
