DAVE Fearon produced a season-best performance in the Leigh Premier RC time trial on Sunday, run over a 10-mile course instead of a planned 25.

The Weaver Valley Cycling Club rider timed 22.54 to place just outside the top 20 at Rainford, while wife Caroline clocked 27.31 to finish 52nd.

Phil Williams (Liverpool Phoenix) took victory in 20.10, nine seconds clear of second-placed Mark Nulty.

Jim Duffy led Weaver Valley’s contingent in the Stone Wheelers 25 on Saturday, completing a course at Blythe Bridge in a personal best 55.20.

Dave Fearon (56.10), Colin Carthy (1:01.31), Jack Fearon (1:05.34) and Caroline Fearon (1:08.44) were also in action.

Second-claim Weaver Valley rider Carl Ruebotham, returning to competitive action with Team Swift following several years away, posted an impressive 54.10 to classify 17th.

Heavy rain prompted the event to be abandoned later in the afternoon, leaving some entrants unable to record a time.

Duffy had also contested the fourth round of the Dave Astles Memorial Road Race series in midweek, finishing second behind Steve Davies (Omnipex) in the men’s 45-55 age group race.

Weaver Valley teammate Mark Adshead crossed the line in the bunch at the end of three laps of a course around Siddington.

In the over 55s race, Kevan Underhill claimed fifth spot – third in his age category – after Graham Weigh Racing Team resisted attempts to catch breakaway leader Dave Cummins.

Weaver Valley’s open 10-mile time trial series continues most Wednesdays throughout the summer.

Veteran Jim Williams (23.45), Geoff Mullett (23.51) and youngster Jacob Booth (Team Bikehaus), with 23.30, were among the fastest in last week’s edition.

Dave and Caroline Fearon timed 23.34 on their tandem.
