SAM Hind’s last-minute goal earned 1874 Northwich a second crack at Colne in a replay.

Both teams could make a claim they should have progressed to a first qualifying round meeting with Hyde United, conquerors of Cammell Laird, which probably means the result was right.

Hind had put his side ahead, only for Ben Wharton to restore parity shortly afterwards.

Joe Garvin’s goal, with five minutes left, appeared to have settled the outcome Reds’ way before Hind bundled in a loose ball with time running out.

It increases his tally for the campaign to five.

The former Abbey Hey front man’s most telling contribution in the first half was to send a cross Tom Bailey’s way after latching onto Matthew Woolley’s pass.

However back-marker Chris Lynch intercepted in the nick of time.

Colne goalkeeper Nosakhare Aghayere then saved smartly low to his left when Bailey shot at goal after a forward ball – buoyed by a strong wind – had bounced over Lee Pugh’s head.

Former 1874 favourite Matthew Beadle then teed up Garvin, who picked out Wharton.

His effort was narrowly off-target, then Craig Farnworth blocked Beadle’s attempt.

In the second period, Bailey’s half-volley flashed wide before Wharton was denied by Northwich custodian Greg Hall who saved smartly with a boot.

Hind was in the right place to put Ian Street’s side in front on 64 minutes, converting a rebound after substitute Shelton Payne’s drive diverted his way off an upright.

Colne, promoted last term as North West Counties League champions, were soon level when Garvin’s shot deflected off Danny Thomas into Wharton’s path.

And his touch duly directed the ball out of Hall’s reach.

When Garvin, from replacement Jake Hargreaves’ pass, steered into the corner on 85 minutes, the hosts were favourites to go through.

They were denied a third goal on the counter, with Hall stranded up field after venturing forward for a corner, when Matthew Russell timed a tackle perfectly.

It proved crucial.

Bailey’s header, from a long ball, was smuggled clear by Lynch with Aghayere stranded.

Neither could prevent Hind from scoring with the next touch though.
