VICS boss Adam Lakeland was in sombre mood after his side crashed out of the FA Cup at the first hurdle with a 4-2 defeat at home to Cheadle Town, a team two divisions below them, on Saturday.

The hosts took an early lead through Dan Cockerline, but Samuel Noar soon equalised before a double from Michael Sherrington and one more from Tabiso Magida made Alex Byrne’s last-minute effort inconsequential.

After the game, Lakeland acknowledged the team had missed out on the opportunity to develop the club in numerous ways.

“Firstly I would like to apologise to the supporters and board members for the performance and result this afternoon,” he said.

“I know how important the FA Cup is to non-league clubs not just for the money generated by progressing but also the ability it has to raise awareness and the overall profile of the club.

“This result has seen us lose out on both of these elements and as manager I accept and take full responsibility for the on field performance.”

Lakeland says the manner of the defeat was the most disappointing aspect ahead of a return to league action against Spalding at Wincham Park on Saturday before a trip to title favourites Shaw Lane on Bank Holiday Monday.

“I cannot put my finger on why we got this performance today as we played much better on Saturday and Wednesday than we did today and were unlucky not to win those games against much stronger opposition,” he said.

“Without being disrespectful to Cheadle, who were worthy winners on the day and we wish them well for the remainder of the season, but they are two leagues below us and whilst I know that upsets happen in the FA Cup, we should not be losing to them regardless of the team we field.”
