STEVE Lloyd believes the return of Danny Meadowcroft can help inspire a change in fortune at Barnton after a difficult start to the season.

The defender was co-manager when the Villagers secured promotion to the North West Counties League top flight for the first time after winning a play-off against Bacup.

He began the current campaign in the same role at Widnes before leaving earlier this month.

“I’m happy to bring Danny back to the club, not only for his experience but because of his attachment to us,” said Lloyd.

“We’ve been dealt a few blows lately, but this signing is a significant step in the right direction.”

Barnton exited the FA Vase last weekend following a 3-2 defeat at lower-ranked Ashton Town, then lost by the same score at Abbey Hey in midweek.

They have been beaten now in eight of their past nine Premier Division fixtures, although a lengthy injury list has not helped.

Chris Bandell (ankle), Jack Warren (knee) and Shaun Alcock (groin) all picked up knocks on Tuesday, while captain Jon Shakeshaft, Josh Crofts and Paul Alcock are unavailable for a Macron Cup clash with Nelson this afternoon.

Lloyd said: “It’s unreal, and I’ve never known anything like it.

“Our performance was undoubtedly a better one at Abbey Hey, but it’s come at a cost with further injuries.”

Jack McKay returned to training on Thursday after a lay-off, while Barnton have promoted reserve-team regulars Dom Bazley, Callum Richards, Sam Tomkinson and Oscar Billington to the squad this weekend.

They lost 4-0 away to the Admirals when the teams met in a Premier Division game last month.
