WINNINGTON Park Rugby Club’s senior colts are having another successful year.

One piece of silverware is already in the bag and another is up for grabs this weekend.

They narrowly missed out on promotion to League A of the Halbro Colts League by two points to Kendal, despite notable wins against Kendal, Leigh and a thumping 72-0 victory over Manchester.

After Christmas, the colts continued their good run of form to be victorious in all their games and winning their league by a substantial margin – the second year in a row they have been league winners!

Along the way, they beat Firwood Waterloo, Heaton Moor, Preston Grasshoppers, Kirkby Lonsdale and Warrington.

The players picked up the trophy at Manchester RFC on Friday.

The colts have also had a good run in the two cup competitions.

They lost their semi final of the Cheshire Cup to Caldy but they have reached the League Cup Final against Wirral at Eccles RFC on Sunday.

Team captain Frank Gibbons said: “I’m really proud of the way the team have played this season.

“Even when we haven’t been playing well the team have come together to get the win.”

The WPRFC colts team are drawn from all the schools and colleges in the local area and many players are expected to go on to play senior rugby for the club.

In fact, the majority of the players in the first team have been through the successful minis and juniors pathway at Winnington Park.

Colts team manager Christopher Sheppard said: “The season has been long and hard.

“The hard work and determination at training that the lads have put in is paying off.

“It has been fantastic to see their skills develop and their personalities mature.

“I’ll definitely be looking forward to seeing them play for the seniors. It’s been a pleasure and I can’t wait for next season.”
