ON Monday, May 16, a motion to suspend the Mayoral convention was approved at the annual general meeting of the Winsford Town Council.

The reason given for the suspension of the Mayoral convention is that the new town clerk Mark Baily will need an “experienced mayor” to assist him for the first few months of 2016.

However, the plan is to suspend the mayoral convention for the next three years until 2019 which is when the next local elections will be held.

This suggests that the Labour group would have you believe it is going to take a highly qualified town clerk three long years to discover what a mayor’s duties are.

The reality is the next two councillors in line for the role of mayor are both Lib Dems.

Are the controlling Labour group horrified that they should get another Lib Dem Mayor, to follow Councillor Ailsa Gaskill- Jones, the retiring Mayor, who by common consent has been by the far the best town mayor Winsford has had for many many years?

You are going to get a Labour Mayor in Winsford for the foreseeable future. So long as they are the biggest party on the council they can keep suspending the mayoral convention for evermore.
